Surely not!? Especially when the weather has been so pap for the last 2 weeks!
So, this weekend, what to do…?
1. Plant out sweat peas – mine are now quite long and a little bit unruly, so I have now thought that I just need to get them in the ground. They should have gone in ages ago, as they are hardy, but…its me! I am going to grow them up some trellis fencing next to the veg patch and also on bamboo canes in the borders. You can NEVER have enough sweat peas! I just pick them and put them all round the house, and next door get them, and my mum and dad, and visitors….anyone really! You’ll have loads!
2. plant more sweetcorn, as I only have 8 out of 15 that have germinated – I thought they were a bit pap last year, but have now realised it must…be…the seed! Not me {cough}, of course. I don’t think that 8 will be enough for decent germination…? Any advice please…?
3. Do my bedding plant boxes – I did some the other week – I’ve got some hay planters as window boxes that I planted up for under the kitchen windows but I want loads of colour this year, as last year, was a bit of a poor show, and I missed having loads of colour. You can never have too many bedding plants!
4. I MAY plant some winter ornamental cabbage – its just run to seed, so this may be the time to pant some for the winter. if i can be bothered…?
So, enjoy the weekend, get outside in the SUN (I know – whats that!?) and happy digging!
I know! And we’re going to miss it by going on holiday! Who needs a holiday with a sunny bank holiday coming up? Oh well, my beans and tomatoes are out in the big wide world now so at least they will enjoy it.
Have a good one!
I’m hoping to get my bedding plants in over the weekend too. I had a little ornamental wheelbarrow bought for Christmas so I’m hoping that it will look nice filled with flowers.
I never seem to have bad germination with sweetcorn. I have planted 30 and 28 have germinated. I fill toilet roll inners with compost and plant the seeds about an inch deep. They get put on a sunny window ledge and they are usually up within days. I usually plant them out after about three weeks.
It is a treat, and I’m working right the way through until Friday afternoon. Oh well.
Hiya!
Sweetcorn is a bugger. It’s the variety, not the seed – don’t panic. Some varieties just WON’T germinate unless conditions are 100% perfect. Most reliable one I’ve found is Kelvedon Glory. Worst was Swift, which was USELESS….
Hey rachael – hope you enjoyed your jollies, and you do know that if you a. on holiday and b. the veg are out, that does mean FROST! ARGHHHHHHHH!
hey Jo – Hope the bedding went in, mine did and I have the ingrained dirty hands to prove it – I still have more to do though! I’m thinking it may be you are a god of all things sweetcorn – see Soilman above!
Hello ALLS – damn that work! Well, if you could see outside, it was lovely – hope you get out next weekend, as its also a scorcher – whooooo-ho!
Hey SM – hurrah, at least I am not cursed with the ‘hand that kills sweetcorn’. Next year I shall get some better seed (its from the Real Seed Co too…….!)
Cat x
Hmmm, don’t know if I should say this after Soilman’s comment, but I’m growing Swift.
Note also that I say I can get them to germinate ok. I haven’t said that I can get them to grow at the allotment. I’ve always grown them in containers before, this will be the first time at the allotment, and I’m doing a bit of an experiment using two thirds of the three sisters method (I’ve posted about this on my blog), so you will probably end up with better results than me!
Hello Jo! Hey, germination is a lot better than mine, and I’ve killed near enough everything, so you are doing brilliantly well!!! I’ve done the 2/3rds of the 3 sisters this weekend too! Busy, busy, busy! I’ll pop over to ours too. Bye x
