The sweet corn saga continues.
My motto: if in doubt, just get some from your mates!
I now have an ABUNDANCE of sweet corn! I have about 18 plants….Yes – 18!!
- 3 are mine (the other 5 have pegged it),
- 3 are Kens, Mr Veg’s bezzie mate (who’s now gone green fingered – we are surrounding Mr Veg!)
- 12 are one of my sub contractors from work.
Get me – talking veg at work!
There is something called 3 sisters where you plant sweet corn for height, then cover the ground with squash or corgettes, and then plant beans to go up the sweetcorn.
So, I have planted the 2 sisters – sweet corn and the corgettes – don’t want to be pushing my luck too much, and the beans are bigger than the sweet corn, so thats not going to work!

I had my first strawberry of the season and then the birds beat me to the other 4 – little sods. So yesterday, I raided the recycling bin and got out the jars and put them round the green berries. Hopefully I may actually have some for a fruit salad? Or a flan!!!! Yum!

Mr Bee – there have been loads of docile bees at the moment, and not sure if it’s the right thing to do, but there was a bee on its back, flailing, so I fed it some manuka honey, put it outside and it was gone later on. Took a picture – looks a bit freaky…..!

Ooh I can beat that! 41 sweetcorn plants!!! I decided not to do things by half measures this year!
Three sisters is a great way of planting – it’s an ancient Native American method I believe. What type of sweetcorn are you growing?
Your strawberries look delicious. I’ve covered my strawberry bed with netting to keep the birds off them. There’s still the slugs though of course!
Rachael – 41 plants – are you INSANE….I think so!
) I will just have to look at those and they will keel over crying in pain, as the sweetcorn killer bears them the death stare!
Hey Liz – I am growing…..Sweetcorn….not kind of sure what they are type wise, apart from that they are alive and I am happy…
Hey Jo – all hail the queen of sweetcorn…I bow in your presence
) – I looked at lunchtime and I’ve only got about 10 strawberries, but they are all covered by glass and bright red! Guess whats for afters….yum!
I picked lettuce at lunch for people at work, and I found a great big horrid brown slug hiding under the lettuce – HATE them – if I touch them I kind of jump and shudder for about 10 mins! Eurgh!!! (even now i’m doing that shudder thing, thinking about touching slugs…..blurgh!)
I got my first strawberries too, just in time for the Chicks to come eat them! R xx
